Just Because Two People Fell in Love.
Denny and Sandy Freeman didn't envision living on a spacious, scenic farm when they married in 1963. But their hearts were always in Northern Michigan.
Sonshine Acres was birthed in the heart of Sandy Freeman who had fond childhood memories of shucking corn in the corn stile on a relative’s farm in Kalkaska. When Denny and Sandy moved to Gaylord in 1978, her dream became a reality when they purchased a thirty-three acre farm, they named Sonshine Acres.
Here, they raised their six children and various animals including sheep, steer, chickens, geese, horses, miniature horses, donkeys, and pigs.
In the summer of 2013, Denny and Sandy renewed their vows as part of their 50th-wedding anniversary celebration held in their backyard. A year later, they hosted their granddaughter’s wedding reception and a month later, they hosted their grandson’s wedding.
In 2016, Sonshine Barn Wedding & Events Center was launched to fulfill the Freemans' desire to make their property available to the community for their own weddings and other important events.
